System Goals & Concept

Goals
  • Generate 1 kilowatt (net) of usable electricity at 60 Hz.
  • Utilize inexpensive, possibly used, parts that are easily acquired
  • Create a system that is easily maintained and repaired.
  • Develop a simple system plan that can be easily reproduced.
Concept
The images below represent the general concept of our Rankine cycle generator. Image 1 shows the working fluid from the solar trough system as it passes through the heat exchanger. The oil in the pipes will exchange heat with the water in the tank in order to boil it. Image 2 illustrates the Rankine process from (1) Boiling water to steam->(2) Steam sent through the turbine to turn the generator-> (3) Steam exits the turbine to condenser-> (4) Pumped back into the boiler.

Start Up

This site will document the design and fabrication of the Organic Rankine Cycle Micro Generator for the Senior Design 2009-2010 group. Subsequent posts will detail milestones set by the group.
